for Heavy Female Runners Buyer’s Guide

The last thing you want to do when you’re looking for a pair of running shoes is to go in completely blind.

I remember the first pair of running shoes I bought when I first got started.

They weren’t the worst things in the world, but they certainly didn’t aid me in my running experience.

Don’t make my mistake!

Here are some of the key things you need to consider when buying a pair of running shoes.

Support

Shoes are like friends – only keep them if they give you the support you need. If you run in a pair of shoes that don’t support you, you may end up getting hurt.

You likely won’t enjoy them as much either. So, you will need to think about the kind of support that you need.

First and foremost, consider your feet and if they have any underlying issues. If you over pronate for instance, you will need a running shoe that helps with that.

Consider your arches, and how much support that you really need.

As a heavy runner, you need more support for your feet, so you need to make sure that there’s a lot of cushioning underneath your feet as you run.

It’s important that that is the correct kind of cushioning for you, however.

As a heavy runner, it’s important that you also make sure you have enough support in the arch, because you are not likely to have an arch high enough that can support your body in the way that you need it to.

Not having the correct arch support can be problematic, as it may mean that you end up getting pain in your ankles, knees and legs.

I’ve never personally enjoyed hobbling after a run – I’m pretty sure that you won’t either.

Breathability

When you’re looking for a running shoe you should always try to find an option that allows the air to freely circulate while you are running.

If the shoe can’t breathe properly then your feet will feel sweaty, and the sweat may end up clinging to the shoes which can impact the durability.

If you want your mother in law to truly despise you, grab a pair of running shoes that are a bit past their use by date, run in them for an hour on a scorching hot day and take them off in her corridor.

Jokes aside, If you are looking for more breathability then you should try to opt for shoes that are made out of mesh material, as these breathe better.

This way, your feet will stay cool as you run. Easy. Breezy.

Good Fit

Attempting to cram your foot into a shoe that just doesn’t fit really doesn’t achieve anything. You want your running shoes to be like Cinderella and her glass slippers – a perfect match.

It’s important to make sure that you find a shoe that can fit you properly. The right fit not only makes your run more enjoyable, but it also means that you are less likely to get injured.

Check that the shoes fit true to size – you can usually see this by looking on the manufacturer’s website or by looking at other customer reviews.

Durability

Shoes can be pretty expensive, so it’s important to make sure that you buy ones that are going to stand the test of time.

A good run can really take its toll on your ol’ faithful running lugs, so make sure that they are tough.

Sure, you could get a pair of running shoes that cost barely anything, but they may end up falling apart and costing you more money after a while.

The alternative is much more attractive: you spend a little extra, you have shoes that are going to last in the long term.

There’s nothing more enjoyable than a couple of extra dollars in your pocket from making a good investment. Except, maybe, a run.

Comfort

When you are running it is absolutely paramount that you are comfortable when doing so.

You aren’t very likely to wear a pair of running shoes if they are uncomfortable, so you need to make sure that the shoes have the cushioning that you require.

Running can be a strenuous exercise, especially after long distances, so you need that pillowy softness to keep you moving!

Think about the comfort of the whole shoe – the cushioning, shock absorption, fit, midsole, insole and the outsole.

It’s also worth seeing what other runners think about the shoe in regards to comfortability.

Terrain

Not everyone runs in the same location, so it’s always a good idea to consider the places where you are planning on running before you buy your new running shoes.

You should look at shoes that are suited to that type of terrain.

For example, the shoe that you have for running on a trail may be slightly different to the shoe that you have for running on a sandy beach.

You may need different shoes if you are planning on running on a treadmill. These things should be taken into consideration.

Colour and Design

Nobody wants to run in running shoes that are ugly. You want to run in something that will give you confidence, and make you feel powerful while you run.

Sure you could get a less attractive pair of shoes, but why do that if you don’t have to?

Try to find shoes that have a design that catches your eye, and something that you are going to enjoy running in.

Colour and design shouldn’t be at the top of your priority list when it comes to running shoes, but it’s certainly something that’s worth considering.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure that I have the right form when I am running?

It’s essential that you have the right form while running. This is true for everyone but especially for heavier runners who may be more likely to get injured.

Having the correct form means that the shock will be better distributed which means that you are less likely to get pain in your joints.

There are a few key things to remember when you are running. First of all, when you are running you should make sure that you are looking directly ahead of you.

Make sure that your shoulders are pulled off – you shouldn’t be hunching. Your arms will need to be at a 90 degree angle with your elbows positioned to your side.

Make sure that your hands are nice and relaxed, squeezing them will not help. You should also have a tight core, and your hips should be leaning slightly into your run.

When you are running, aim to have your legs at a 90 degree angle, and try to hit the ground with the ball of your feet.

How do I get the best performance as a heavier runner?

Beyond form, you should also make sure that when you are shopping for your running shoes that the shoes are relatively lightweight and provide you with optimal stability.

This is going to be helpful for endurance, and it is more likely that you will be energised even after running for a while as you won’t be running with an incredibly heavy shoe.

If you are struggling with comfort, you should also think about orthotics. These can be very helpful for running long distances.

You can get over the counter orthotics or you can get them fitted by your doctor.
