Garmin Connect Custom Training Plan Workout

If you have a garmin watch you may or may not be aware of the facility to create your own Workouts.

This is something I use and think is a great feature on the watches.
For once THIS is a Bell & Whistle that is worth having 🙂

If you have not come across it before, it is a great way to ensure you are in the right way without having to have your eyes glued to your watch.

You can do this directly on your watch, but I find it is far easier using Garmin Connect on your PC/Mac.

Before I go on I should say that although most do, not all Garmin watches have the facility.

Therefore I suggest you just check online to see whether you can use the custom workout feature.

OK, with that out the way, what exactly IS a custom workout?

Well it is a feature that allows you to map out a run on your watch before you go out.

You can set things like distance, speed, pace, timings, and a combination of all these things to make your workout as detailed as you wish.

Once on your watch, the ‘workout’ will notify you when a certain part of your run is going to start or stop.

It will also keep you within a certain range, by warning you if you go outside of the range you specify.

This is great, for example, if the plan you are doing tells you that you shouldn’t go over a certain pace, or heart rate etc.

The video tutorial below takes you step by step through the simple process of creating a customer workout.

I have done this via my PC, but it is a very similar process on your smart phone if you have the Garmin Connect App installed.

Once you have created your Workout and synced it over to your watch, you select it by going into:

Run – Workouts – My Workouts – Name of the custom workout your created.

(again this might differ slightly depending on the watch you have)

Once you start the Workout, you just need to set off and wait for the tone to tell you it is time for the next part of your workout.

It will also display exactly what you should be doing in the next section of your workout.

Once you create your custom workouts, you can revisit them at any point to adjust the settings.

Just go back into the Workout area of Garmin Connect, click the edit icon next to the work out to be edited, and edit the elements you need to change.

As you can see it is very easy to create your own Workout, so why not give it a go for your next training plan.

  1. I have an older Garmin (Forerunner 230) and I doubt that it has that feature, but it may so I should check into it. Thanks for the info!

    1. I’m pretty sure I’ve read that you can create custom workouts for the 230. I know I find Custom Workouts a great feature of the Garmin, so well worth looking into in my opinion 🙂
